Smart Board Technology Summary

Integration of Smart Board Technology and Effective Teaching.

This blog is a Summary of a scholarly paper, by Kathryn Min and Christine Siegel.

Introduction of summary

This paper presents the results of a study which evaluated the influence of SMART Board technology in schools. Technology is fundamental in today's society, it is important for teachers and parents to incorporate technology into the student's everyday education. The more the student's use technology to complete activities, the more technologically advanced they become which is very important.

Observation of Students

This study concentrates on how students engage and perceive class activities. The study was completed using momentary time-sampling procedure. Second-grade students were observed as they completed activities in class with and without the use of a SMART Board, for a time period of 30 minutes.

Students who are involved in class activities tend to display on-task behaviors that may comprise of answering questions, weighing in on class discussions, following instructions, or keeping eye-contact with the teacher. On the other hand, detached students display off-task behaviors such as playing, not making eye-contact, not listening to the teacher, talking to other students and causing distractions.

Questionnaire

The results were measured using questionnaires. Four questions were asked with a yes or no answer, these questions were: "When the teacher uses the SMART Board, the class is more fun than when the teacher does not use it. When the teacher uses the SMART Board, I get to participate more than when the teacher does not use it. When the teacher uses the SMART Board, I understand more than when the teacher does not use it. When the teacher uses the SMART Board, I pay more attention than when the teacher does not use it."  (Min, & Seigel, 2011).

Results

The results of this study revealed that without the use of a SMART Board, effective teaching can promote elevated levels of student engagement. With the use of a SMART Board on-task behavior can increase, but with the use of SMART Boards and effective teaching, students can uphold high levels of engagement throughout a variety of components in a given lesson. The questionnaire results support the use of SMART Board technology in schools to engage the students.

Today's students are growing up in a technological world, to take away all technology in education may disconnect many students from learning. The key in education is to use a variety of skills to teach such as technology and effective teaching for optimal results for students.

FIVE questions with answers based on the content of this article.

1. Is technology alone enough to satisfy student's needs in class?

No, technology alone is not enough to satisfy student's educational needs. Effective teaching from teachers is needed for student's together with technology to reach their full potential.

2. Are SMART Boards environmentally friendly?

Yes, SMART Boards are environmentally friendly. They do not require the need to print worksheets for students to complete activities on as they can complete these activities on the board or online through the SMART Board.

3. Are SMART Boards easy to keep clean and maintain?

Yes, SMART Boards are easy to keep clean and maintain. When using regular whiteboards or chalkboards you need markers and chalk to be able to write on these boards. Markers and chalk can cause a mess and be hard to clean up, they also need to be purchased regularly as they run out after time.

4. Do SMART Boards allow for technology integration?

Yes, SMART Boards can connect too many different types of technology. Teachers can connect their cell phones, computers, cameras and anything else that can contribute to the student's education.

5. Can SMART Boards connect to the internet?

Yes, SMART Boards can connect to any online medium available. This allows teachers and students to access any information online for a more advanced understanding of what is being taught.
